Backcasting

Using Backcasting to Achieve Transformational Change

Backcasting can help an organization by providing a roadmap for transformational change, staying on track with long-term goals, planning for major changes, creating a strategic roadmap backwards from the future, and understanding what steps are necessary to get to that desired future.

How does the backcasting process work?

Backcasting is a planning method that begins by defining a desirable future and then works backwards to identify policies and programs that will connect the present to the desired future. It is used as a workshop approach to sensitize people to the pace of change, imagine an ideal future, and keep the end goal in mind. Backcasting is a way to plan for transformational change by starting with the desired outcome and working backwards.
